Abstract
An indicator for determining albumin in liquids comprises a bibulous body such as paper impregnated with an indicator dye which exhibits protein error, and a solid acid-reacting material effective to buffer the body and the dye at a point adjacent to but on the acid side of the pH at which the colour-changes of the dye normally occurs. The acid reacting material is usually a mixture of sodium citrate and citric acid but exemplified are a mixture of phthalic acid and fumaric acid, aluminium sulphate or sulphates and the following acids used singly or in combination: ascorbic, salicylic, sulphosalicylic, oxalic, itaconic, gluconic, sulphamic, succinic, benzoic, mandelic, glutaric, malic, tartaric, maleic, citric, phthalic, and sulphosalicylic, and sodium carbonate/bicarbonate and mixtures of sodium phosphates. The dyes exemplified are tetrabromophenolphthalein ethyl ester, brom phenol blue, brom cresol green, dimethylaminoazobenzene and Congo Red.
