Abstract
825,139. Root crop harvesters. BRITISH SOCIETY FOR RESEARCH IN AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING. July 25, 1957 [July 25, 1956], No. 23062/56. Class 6(3). A potato or root crop harvester comprises a digging device 17 in which members 18 are arranged side by side with their upper surfaces 19 inclined upwards and rearwards and are so mounted and driven that any point on any of their upper surfaces 19 moves, in relation to the machine, in a cyclic path in a roughly vertical plane, each member 18 being out of phase with the member or members adjacent. The machine is mounted on a tool bar 10 having a framework 11 with attachment eyes 12, 13, a tubular support 16 depending from the bar 10 and carrying the device 17 of which the members 18 have each a rear arm 21 journalled on two crank pins 22, 23 of two shafts 24, 25 respectively. The shafts 24, 25 are driven through chain drives 26, 27 from a countershaft 28 through a gear-box (not shown), from the tractor power take-off. Members 18 move in paths shown at 29, Fig. 1. A conveyer 32 preferably of the chain or riddling type, is driven by shaft 28. In a modification the upper surfaces 19 of the members 18 are covered by a flexible sheet to which the members 18 impart an upward rippling motion.
