The piston 14 of an hydraulic ram has tapered extensions 18, 28 which at the end of each stroke progressively diminish to effective cross-sectional areas of the ports 12a, 12 to produce a cushioning effect. Grooves 20a, 20 in the extensions allow liquid to pass into the cylinder when the ram is at either extreme position, to initiate the return stroke.
