Abstract

813,963. Grinding and polishing. CARBORUNDUM CO. May 23, 1957 [June 1, 1956], No. 16362/57. Class 60. A contact element for backing up an abrasive belt and holding it against the workpiece during abrading operations has a transversely serrated surface comprising a series of lands separated by grooves filled with a material softer than the material of said lands. The contact element may be a wheel, platen or belt. A contact wheel, Figs. 2 & 3, of cast aluminium has integral hub 11, web 13 and flange 14. Bonder to the periphery of the flange 14 is a rim 15 of hard rubber or ebonite having lands 18 separated by grooves 20 filled with a soft rubber composition 19. In a modification, Fig. 4, the material 21 in each groove 20 has a slot 22 to increase its yieldability. In a further modification, Fig. 6, a soft rubber composition 24 alternates with a soft rubber composition 25 of a different density. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the material 27 does not completely fill the grooves 20, thus forming recesses 28.
