Abstract

813,245. Steering vehicles. ALFORD & ALDER (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Jan. 22, 1957 [Jan. 24, 1956], No. 2369/56. Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXIV] In a steering gear of the kind comprising in combination, a pinion 15 supported in bearings 19 in a housing 13, a rack 16 extending transversely of the pinion 15 and meshing therewith, a support member 11 extending from the pinion housing 13 parallel to the rack 16 and supporting a bearing member 28 for the rack adjacent the pinion and a further bearing 33 for the rack at a distance from the pinion, the support member 11 comprises a sleeve through which the rack 16 extends, this sleeve being made from standard tube cut to length, and the pinion housing 13 is a tubular member secured to the sleeve 11 around the rack 16, for example by copper brazing. The pinion housing 13 is also cut from standard tube and is brazed into a recess 12 milled out in one side of the sleeve 11. The bearing member for the rack adjacent the pinion comprises a sliding bearing block 28 that is pressed by a spring 30 against the back of the rack 16 to keep it in firm engagement with the pinion teeth. The housing for the block 28 comprises a tube 27 brazed into an aperture in the sleeve 11. The sleeve 11 is secured to a vehicle frame by means of brackets 34, 35 brazed thereto. The bearings 19 may comprise needle roller bearings, and the pinion 15 has a reduced end 21 which passes through a retaining ring 22 which is retained in place in the housing 13 by a lip spun over on to it. Alternatively the pinion may be supported in plain bearing bushes, shoulders formed on the pinion engaging the ends of the bushes to retain the pinion in place in the housing. In manufacturing the steering gear the various tubular housing parts and preferably the brackets 34, 35 are assembled and held together in correct positional relationship, with a brazing compound applied at the metal surfaces to be united, and brazing effected by passing the assembly through a furnace. Specifications 766,141 [Group XXIV] and 813,246 are referred to.
