Class 146(3) A pencil or like sharpener comprises a rotatable cylindrical cutter 5 carried by a spindle 5<SP>1</SP> which is rotatably mounted on a rotatable shalft 3, a gear wheel 6 fixed to said spindle being engaged by a fixed gear 7, a device 9 carried by the shaft 3 for adjusting the length of point to be given to the pencil, said device being movable in relation to the shaft and having a lug 10 which deflects shavings so that they do not enter the gears, the shaft having a radial projection 17 cooperating with the housing 1 to convey the shavings away. The shaft 3 is mounted in the housing 1 and is driven by a handcrank 4, at the opposite end to which is a recess 20 to accommodate the pencil to be sharpened; when the crank 4 is turned the gear wheel and cutter are rotated and the pencil sharpened. The projection 17 rotates with the shaft 3 and sweeps the pencil shavings through an aperture 18 into a collecting box (not shown) below. The device 9 for adjusting the length of point is slidably mounted on a flattened portion 21 of the shaft 3 and is retained there by a coil spring 14 which passes round the shaft 3, through a hole 22 in the projection 17 and is attached by its ends to studs 15, 16 on the device. The pencil lead engages an abutment 11 on device 9. A bent-over rear portion 13 of the device engages an annular groove 12 in an adjusting screw 8 mounted in the shaft 3 and which may be manually rotated to vary the distance of the abutment 11 from the apex of the recess 20. The lug 10 on the device is parallel to and to one side of the end face of the cutter adjacent to the gearing.
