A nuclear fuel element comprises an outer sheath of metallic uranium and a core of a uranium compound which does not undergo an a-# microscopic structure change when the reactor is so operating that the temperature of the sheath is just below that at which the uranium undergoes such a change. The compound may be a carbide or an oxide of uranium, for example UC or UO 2 .
