Abstract
Carbon dioxide is removed from a gaseous mixture, e.g. a mixture comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide with simultaneous production of sodium bicarbonate in two stages, the gaseous mixture being contacted in one stage with a solution obtained by dissolving sodium carbonate containing as impurity one or more sodium salts, e.g. sodium nitrate, chloride or sulphate, which are utilizable as reactants in an ammonia-soda process, and in the other stage with an ammoniacal solution of one or more sodium salts to which is bled continuously or intermittently solution from the first mentioned stage before the solution in <PICT:0812795/III/1> said stage becomes saturated with impurity. The second mentioned stage may be an ammonia-soda process as described in Specification 812,134. The sodium carbonate for the first mentioned stage or from the Le Blanc or a known ammonia-soda process. A sodium chloride concentration of 5-10 per cent may be maintained in the solution of the first mentioned stage. The carbon dioxide removal may be effected entirely after a conversion of the carbon monoxide content of synthesis gas to carbon dioxide, or partially before and partially after. In the latter case, either or both of the carbon dioxide removal operations may be according to the present invention. As shown, the continuous carbonate-bicarbonate process is effected in an apparatus consisting of three units in series, each unit comprising an absorption tower (2, 3 or 4), a mixing vessel (8, 13 or 20), a solid sodium carbonate inlet (9, 15 or 21), a sodium bicarbonate separation vessel (6, 14 or 26), and an overflow pipe (30, 12 or 19). The gas passes from first inlet 1 to last outlet 31, while the solution passes in countercurrent flow from the first mixing vessel 20, which has an inlet 22 for condensate to a last overflow pipe 30. Gas and liquid from outlet 31 and pipe 30 respectively are passed to an associated ammonia-soda process.
