Abstract
A wholly inorganic catalyst for polymerizing hydrocarbons comprises a mixture of a halide of a Group IV metal, and a metal selected from the groups: Na, K, Cs, Rb, Li, Be, Ng, Cd, Zn, Hg, Al, Ga, In, or Tl. The metal halide may be tri- or tetra halides of Th, Ti, Zr, Ce, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, or Hf. Preferred compositions are: (1) magnesium or aluminium and titanium tetrachloride; (2) sodium and titanium tetrachloride with or without added magnesium. Preferred proportions are 0.2 to 5 mols. of metal to 1 mol. of the halide. Olefines polymerized are 1-olefines preferably having not more than 8C atoms and no branch nearer the double bond than 4-position. Examples are: ethylene, 1-butene, cyclohexene, styrene or mixtures thereof to form co-polymers. Diluents may be present, e.g. propane, butane, benzene, methyl cyclohexane. Polymerization may be by continuous or batch process and effected under a blanket of nitrogen.ALSO:A wholly inorganic catalyst for polymerizing unsaturated hydrocarbons comprises a mixture of a Group IV metal halide, and at least one metal selected from the group Na, K, Cs, Rb, Li, Be, Mg, Hg, Cd, Zn, Al, Ga, In or Tl. The metal halide may be a tri- or tetra-halide of Th, Ti, Zr, Ce, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb or Hf. Preferred compositions are: (1) magnesium or aluminium and titanium tetrachloride, (2) sodium and titanium tetrachloride with or without added magnesium. The corresponding bromides, iodides, and fluorides are referred to. Preferred proportions are 0.2 to 5 mols. of metal to 1 mol. of the halide. Olefines polymerized are 1-olefines preferably having not more than 8 C-atoms and no branch nearer the double bond than the 4-position. Examples are ethylene, 1-butene, cyclohexene, styrene or mixtures thereof to form copolymers. Diluents may be present, e.g. propane, butane, benzene, methyl cyclohexane. Polymerization may be effected in a batch or continuous process, and preferably under a blanket of nitrogen.
