Abstract

Material containing liquid containing organisms (other than anacrobic ones) in suspension, e.g. milk, is exposed to a variable electric current such that the power dissipated per unit volume exceeds a lower limit appropriate to the treated organisms, the liquid being fed to the treatment zone at an initial temperature not above 45 DEG F. above the liquid freezing-point, the treatment being continued until at least 80 per cent of the organisms are killed. Variation in current is by applying electric pulses.
