812,054. Electric automatic control systems. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 11, 1955 [Aug. 11, 1954], No. 23285/54. Class 40 (1). In apparatus for effecting the movement of a machine part 1 by means of a lead screw 2 in accordance with signals derived from a control unit 8, an auxiliary signal representing back-lash between the lead screw 2 and the machine part 1 is added to the control signal from unit 8, the auxiliary signal being obtained from a potentiometer 15 responsive to relative movement between a non-rotatable nut 12 on lead screw 2 and one surface 14 of the machine part 1. The nut 12 is spring-biased against one side of the thread on screw 2. To increase the accuracy the nut 12 may be arranged to engage a fine thread cut on the lead screw 2, or on a supplementary screw geared to the lead screw.
