Abstract

811,877. Centrifugal pumps. DRYSDALE & CO. Ltd. Aug. 14, 1957 [Aug. 31, 1956], 26649/56. Class 110 (1). A submersible pumping installation for an oil tanker ship comprises a centrifugal pump surmounted by and coupled to a rotary hydraulic motor, the pump and motor both having vertical shafts and both being enclosed in an air bell coupled to a centre pipe ascending within the rising main pipe to a headpiece above deck level. A centrifugal pump 14, Fig. 2, is driven by a rotary hydraulic motor 15, and pumps oil from the cargo oil tank in which it is submerged, delivering it through the annular space between an air bell 16 and an outer casing 19 and thence through a rising main 11 to a head fitting 12, Fig. 3, above deck level. A centre pipe 17 running through the rising main 11 and connected to the air bell 16 accommodates pipes 22 which convey pressure driving oil to and from the motor 15 and a pipe 23 which delivers a non - combustible pressure gas, such as carbon dioxide, into the air bell 16 to prevent entry of cargo oil or imflammable gases. A manual control 25 for the motor 15 may be interlocked with the supply of non- combustible gas to ensure that gas-charging precedes motor-starting. A booster pump (not shown) at deck level may be coupled to the head fitting 12.
