Abstract

811,551. Butterfly valves. HENRION, C. E. May 16, 1957 [April 11, 1957], No. 15582/57. Addition to 781,373. Class 135. A butterfly valve rotatably mounted on a shaft 4 of which the length is less than the valve bore so that the valve disc 3 has an unbroken peripheral sealing surface, as in the parent Specification, has an annular groove 12 formed in the periphery of the disc to receive a sealing ring 14 of initially circular crosssection and made of natural or synthetic rubber or polytetrafluoroethylene &c. The groove 12 is lipped at 13 so that its opening is narrower than the cross-sectional diameter of the ring 14 and the arrangement is such that when the valve is closed the upstream pressure urges the ring away from the lip and deforms it as shown in Fig. 3. The shaft 4 is carried on brackets 8 in the valve bore and the disc is actuated by a crank 10 and link 11. The seat for the disc is formed in a liner of non-oxidizable metal and is slightly resilient so that upstream pressure, which has access to the outer part of the liner, can deform the latter to assist in seating.
