Class 109 [Also in Group IX] In a strand consisting of a centre yarn 3 and at least two layers each consisting of a plurality of helically laid yarns 4, 5, or a rope composed of such strands, the component yarns or filaments are of different materials, the centre yarn 3 having a higher extensibility, i.e. higher percentage extension at break, and higher elasticity, i.e. a greater percentage extension under a given load, than the outer yarns 4, 5 of the strands so that load distribution and breaking strength are improved. Among many examples given are the inner yarns 3 of high tenacity nylon and the outer yarns 4, 5 of high tenacity polyethylene terephthalate; inner yarns 3 of medium tenacity nylon, yarns 4 of high tenacity nylon, and outer yarns 5 of high tenacity polyethylene terrephthalate; inner yarns 3 of medium tenacity polyethylene terephthalate, yams 4 of high tenacity polyethylene terephthalate, outer yarns 5 of high tenacity cellulose acetate; inner yarns 3 of low tensile wire, yarns 4 of medium tensile wire, and outer yarns 5 of high tensile wire; inner yarns 3 of natural or synthetic rubber, yarns 4 of staple nylon and yarns 5 of high or medium tenacity nylon.
