Abstract

The presence of mercury vapour in air or other gas is detected by passing the gas through a tube containing a mercuric salt and an indicator which changes colour on reduction, e.g. a gold salt which is reduced to colloidal gold. Preferably silica gel impregnated with small amounts of a mixture of gold and mercuric bromides is used. The impregnated silica may have mounted before it a layer of unimpregnated silica.
