Abstract
Synthetic linear polyamide filaments, films and like products are drawn in two or more stages, each at a temperature below the softening temperature of the polyamide, the first stage being so effected that the ratio of the drawn length to the undrawn length is R1\sB0.4, R1 being determined in accordance with the equation <FORM:0811349/IV (a)/1> where B is the birefringence of the undrawn polyamide material, i.e. the absolute difference in refractive indices along and perpendicular to the axis of the material in unswollen condition. When the birefringence of the polyamide products is 0 to 0.005, R1 may be taken as (4.1\sB0.4)-200B. The drawing stages are preferably effected at a temperature not higher than about 20 DEG C. below the melting temperature of the polyamide, but not below the second order transition temperature. Preferably, also, the first-stage drawing temperature is below the subsequent stage drawing temperatures. The optimum first-stage drawing temperature varies with the rate at which the products enter the drawing zone, the relation being such that, in general, the lower the feeding speed, the closer the first-stage drawing temperature should be to the second order transition temperature. Where a temperature gradient exists in the drawing element, the temperature maximum at the region of maximum tension in the products is the selected first-stage drawing temperature. In an example, freshly formed 140-filament nylon yarn of 4,800 total denier having a birefringence of 0.004 is advanced around a snubbing pin heated to 75 DEG C. to a set of rolls which give a first-stage draw ratio of 3.3. The yarn then passes directly to and over a pipe having a surface temperature of 190 DEG C. in 3 wraps, and thence to a second set of rolls which effect a draw ratio of 1.77, giving a total draw ratio of 5.84. A two-stage drawing process may be carried out without controlling rolls intervening between the stages.
