811,119. Ampoules containing liquids under pressure. DISTILLERS CO. Ltd. April 11, 1957 [Feb. 3, 1956], No. 3408/56. Class 81 (1). A vessel, particularly an ampoule, containing liquid and gas under pressure in excess of atmospheric pressure comprises a sealed transparent container 3, Fig. 3, within which is a transparent tube 1 having a base of capillary dimensions, i.e. about 3.5 mm., one end of which is open to the interior of the container, the other end being sealed. The invention has particular application to glass ampoules containing injectable liquids under pressure that are designed to be adapted for use with hypodermic needles through a flexible tube 7. The purpose of the tube of capillary bore is to act as a pressure gauge, since when the ampoule is filled and the contents thereof subjected to pressure the liquid 2 will be forced into the capillary tube, the open end of which is in contact with the liquid. Any subsequent leak in the ampoule resulting in loss of pressure will manifest itself by a movement of the meniscus 5 within the capillary tube.
