Abstract

Sealing pads for closures may be prepared by depositing in closure shells, e.g. crown shells, quantities of vinyl chloride resin plastisols which have been saturated with an inert gas at atmospheric pressure, and forming and curing the plastisols into liners having expanded cellular structures (see Group XVII). The preferred inert gases are carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and air. The vinyl chloride resin may be a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, maleic anhydride, diethyl maleate, vinylidene chloride and trichlorethylene. Specified plasticisers are di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, butyl decyl phthalate, octyl decyl phthalate, diisodecyl phthalate, diisooctyl phthalate, didecyphthalate, didodecyl phthalate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate, ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycolatel methyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, acetyl tributy, citrate, diisobutyl adipate, butyl benzyl phthalate, didecyl azelate, dioctyl azelate, dioctyl adipate, dioctyl sebacate, dibutyl sebacate, trioctyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, tetrahydrofurfuryl adipate, pelargonic acid esters and polyethylene glycol adipate-maleate. Fillers, e.g. talc, calcium carbonate, clays, bentonite, calcium silicate, carbon, silica, diatomaceous earth and cork, pigments and stabilizers, e.g. cadmium and barium laurates, calcium, aluminium, zinc and magnesium stearates, dibutyl tin oxide, trioctyl phosphite, cadmium and barium epoxy compounds, diphenyl urea, polyethylene glycol adipate and adipate-maleate, may be added. Forming and curing may be effected by spinning the shell and heating or by applying a heated shaped plunger to the plastisol.
