Abstract

In a pneumatic tyre comprising silicone rubber reinforced with metal cords, the silicone rubber consists of the product of vulcanization of a mixture of (1) a polysiloxane of at least 1,000,000 cs. viscosity at 25 DEG C. in which there is an average of from 1.99 to 2 monovalent, or halogenated monovalent, hydrocarbon radicals per silicon atom; (2) from 1 to 10 parts per 100 parts by weight of (1) of an aliphatic hydrocarbon silicate, or a partial hydrolysate thereof, wherein the aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals each contain less than 10 carbon atoms, and (3) from 15 to 100 parts per 100 parts by weight of (1) of a silica filler having a surface area of at least 100 square metres per gram, the surface of said silica being saturated with organosilyl groups of the formula R1nSi which are bonded thereto by SiOSi linkages wherein each R1 is a monovalent, or halogenated monovalent hydrocarbon radical having less than 7 carbon atoms and n is 2 or 3. Suitable polysiloxanes for constituent (1) include dimethyl-, phenylmethyl-, vinyl methyl-, octadecylmethyl-, xenylmethyl-, diethyl-, ethylmethyl-, tolylmethyl-, diphenyl-, cyclohexylmethyl-, chlorophenylmethyl-, chloromethylmethyl-, a ,a ,a -trifluorotolylmethyl-, trifluoropropylmethyl-, and bis - fluoropropyl-, polysiloxane and mixtures and copolymers thereof. Examples of aliphatic hydrocarbon silicates which may be used for constituent (2) are tetramethyl-, tetraethyl-, tetraisopropyl-, tetrabutyl-, tetra-allyl-, tetra-2-ethylhexyl-, and diethyldiisopropyl-, silicate and partial hydrolysates thereof, ethyl-silicate being preferred. The silica filler may be obtained by burning a volatile silane and thereafter treating the silica with a reactive organosilicon such as chlorosilane or a silazane. Alternatively, a silica hydrogel or organogel may be reacted with a reactive organosilicon compound. The organosilyl groups attached to the silicas may comprise those in which the hydrocarbon radical is methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, hexyl, vinyl, allyl, phenyl, pentafluoroethyl, chlorophenyl, 3,3,3 - trifluoropropyl, chloromethyl and trifluorovinyl. The silicone rubber is compounded with vulcanizing agents such as benzoylperoxide, tertiary butyl perbenzoate, dicumyl peroxide and 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, and may contain pigments, plasticizer, stabilizers, oxidation inhibitors and compression set additives. The Specification contains specific examples of silicone rubber compounds used.
