Abstract

819,800. Smallarms. ORR, J. E. Nov. 23, 1955 [Nov. 23, 1954], No. 33966/54. Class 119 Ejector mechanism for drop-down guns comprises a sliding extractor, a compression member slidable lengthwise of the extractor leg and adapted to be moved rearwardly by a pin on the action body when the gun is broken, a coiled spring interposed operatively between the compression member and extractor and the compression member having a positively limited lost motion connection with the extractor leg which permits the compression member to stress the spring during initial rearward movement and which subsequently causes positive rearward movement of the extractor to effect extraction of a cartridge; the stressing of the spring is temporarily maintained by a retaining member movable into operative position in response to firing and into an inoperative position by a timed relation with movement of the compression member so as to release the spring when extraction has been effected and causing further rearward movement of the extractor to effect the cartridge. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the extractor leg 11 is tubular and slidably receives a hollow spigot 17 of the compression member 16, a gap 40 providing a lost motion connection between the leg 11 and member 16. A compression spring 18 abuts the spigot 17 and surrounds a striker rod 20 formed with a head 19 against which abuts the other end of the spring 18. This rod 20 is slidable within the member 16 and tube 11 and is formed at its'forward end with a head 21 having a recess 33 adapted to be engaged by a detent 32 on a bell crank lever 28 operated by a cocking rod 35 which is moved forwardly on firing and rearwardly during closure of the breech. On firing the detent 32 enters the recess 33 and when the gun is broken a pin 24 on the action body engages a lug 23 on the compression member 16 to move it rearwardly and compress the spring 18, the rod 20 being held by engagement of the detent 32 with the recess 33. During the movement the lost motion gap 40 is part taken up and then the extractor is moved rearwardly as shown in Fig. 2 to effect extraction but not ejection of the cartridge. At this point the lug 23 engages a portion 42 of the bell crank lever to move the detent 32 from the recess 33 so releasing the striker 20 which is urged by the spring 18 and strikes the end 43 of the extractor leg to move it rearwardly and eject the cartridge. In extracting an unfired cartridge from the breech, the cocking rod 35 remains in its rearward position and hence the striker rod 20 is not held by the detent 32; the spring 18 is therefore not stressed and extraction only of the cartridge occurs during opening of the breech. In a modification. Figs. 3, 4, the extractor leg 45 is of bar form and the compression member 48 and spring 46 are located sideby-side with the leg 45, the spring 46 being interposed between the member 48 and the extractor finger 44. There is a pin and slot connection 47, 49 between the leg 45 and member 48 and the pin 50 in the action body engages between two legs 53, 54 depending from the member 48. The retaining member 55 in this case is vertically movable in the barrel block, its lower end 60 co-operating with a projection on a cocking rod (not shown). The upper end of the member 55 is formed as a detent 56 which 'engages in a recess 57 in the leg 45. On opening the breech after firing, the pin 50 moves the member 48 rearwardly compressing the spring 46 until the pin 47 engages the rear end of the slot 49 when the leg 45 is then moved rearw.ardly to effect extraction, such movement being permitted by travel of the detent 56 to the forward end of the recess 57. At this point a lower edge 61 of the leg 53 engages a cam face 62 on the retaining member 55, to move the detent 56 from the recess 57 when the extractor is moved rearwardly by the spring 46 to eject the cartridge.
