[Also in Group XXX] A cable drum of the type formed with parallel grooves 8 and helical cross-over grooves 9, has a cable-supporting surface 100 formed near flange 4 to support the cable in its transition from the first cable layer to the second cable layer, the surface comprising a first or helical portion 12, a second or riser portion 13, a third or concentric groove portion 15 and a fourth or wedge portion 20 and the cable passing over the said portions in the order named. The locus of the centre of curvature of the riser portion 13 is given by :- where :- R x = radial distance from drum axis. R = radius of drum. d = diameter of cable x = angular distance from end of riser portion. y = twice angular length of riser portion. The locus of the centre of curvature of the wedge portion 20 is given by:- where:- R z = radial distance from drum axis. R = radius of drum. d = diameter of cable. t z = axial distance from a fixed radial plane. y = angular length of helical portions of grooves. z = angular length from end of wedge surface.
