Abstract

819,231. Scrubbing and polishing machines; grinding. SMALLEY, H. May 31, 1957, No. 17311/57. Classes 60 and 138(1). A scrubbing, polishing or abrading device having two or more operative elements adapted to receive endwise reciprocatory motion, the arrangement being such that the operative elements always move in unison, but in opposite directions, and reciprocatory motion being received through crank means adapted to be driven from a source or rotary motion, each element having a series of spaced apart sections, the sections of one series being interspaced between those of the other series and a bridging member being provided for each series of sections, the bridging member of each series being attached to the sections in that series but not connected to the sections in the other series. A shaft 17 drivne from an electric motor through a flexible drive has fixed to it a pinion 18 which drives a reducation gear train comprised successively of wheels 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 the last two being rotated at equal speed in opposite directions and being attached to contra-rotating crank arms 34 and 35. These crank arms carry at their ends crank pins 36 and 37 upon which are mounted crank bushes 38 and 39 to slide in transverse slots formed in the bridge members 40 and 41. The bridge member 40 is attached to plate 51 which joins sections 45, 47, and 49 while member 41 is attached to plate 51a joining sections 46, 48 and 50. These members 45-50 slide to and fro on rods 44 and blocks 53 which may carry spring steel scrubbing plates 55, and are attached by means of studs 54. The operative members may be brushes, polishing pads or abrasive blocks. The reduction gearing is housed outside the main casing 10 and enclosed by a removable cover 12.
