Abstract
Cellulosic pulp, especially pulp of high density, is admixed with a hypochlorite bleaching solution under such conditions of duration and temperature that no substantial bleaching is caused, whereafter the temperature is immediately raised to effect bleaching and, at the desired degree of brightness, the bleaching is stopped by "drowning" the mass in water. The bleach liquor may be distributed in the pulp at temperatures below 80 DEG F. The heating may be effected by the direct application of steam at temperatures of 140 DEG to 212 DEG F. The bleaching may be effected with sodium or calcium hypochlorite solution containing caustic soda. An apparatus is described and contains storage chests, priming tanks, thickeners, a shredder, a mixing-tank, retention chambers and cold water dilution tanks through which the pulp passes sequentially.
