Abstract

Oil-soluble highly basic salts of organic acids are prepared by converting an organic acid dissolved in an oil, into an oil-soluble metal salt, reacting this metal salt with an oil-insoluble metal compound formed in situ, and removing the solid materials from the resultant reaction mixture, and then reacting them with the organic acid to form the initial oil-soluble metal salt. Examples of suitable organic acids are C14-C18 alkyl salicylic acids, petroleum sulphonic acids and naphthenic acids. Examples are given of the preparation of highly basic calcium and copper salicylates. The salts may be used as additives to lubricating oils and greases, e.g. those used in gasoline and Diesel engines. A suitable Diesel engine lubricating oil may be prepared by blending 2 per cent by weight of a highly basic oil-soluble calcium salt of a mixture of C14-C18 alkyl salicylic acids, with a high viscosity index, solvent extracted mineral lubricating oil, having a viscosity of approximately 160 DEG Redwood I at 140 DEG F. The salts can also be used as additives to liquid fuels such as fuel oils and to gasoline. Specifications 739,434, 780,058, 780,642, 785,196, 790,471, 818,323, and 818,326 are referred to.ALSO:Oil-soluble highly basic salts of organic acids are prepared by converting an organic acids, dissolved in an oil, e.g. a hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons, into an oil-soluble metal salt, reacting this metal salt with an oil-insoluble metal compound formed in situ, and removing the solid materials from the resultant reaction mixture, and then reacting them with the organic acid to form the initial oil-soluble metal salt. Examples of suitable organic acids are alkyl salicylic acids containing at least 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group preferably C14-C18 alkyl salicylic acids, petroleum sulphonic acids and naphthenic acids. Examples of the preparation of the salts using C14-C18 alkyl salicylic acids, methanol and varying amounts of lime and carbon dioxide are given. Another example describes the production of a highly basic copper alkyl salicylate by treating a mixture of C14-C18 alkyl salicylic acids dissolved in xylene with cupric hydroxide and treating the solution of the salt thus formed with cupric hydroxide, formed in situ by introducing separate methanolic solutions of cupric chloride and caustic soda. Specifications 739,434, 780,058, 780,642, 785,196, 790,471, 818,323 and 818,326 are referred to.
