[Also in Group XL (a)] A core of fissionable-material is introduced into a casing, e.g. of zirconium, steel, columbium or aluminium, and welded in the molten state to the casing material without soldering. The method is preferably performed by casting. In an example, a uranium-rod is cleaned by electro-polishing, introduced with small clearance into a zirconium can made by deepdrawing or extrusion, and the assembly lowered under high vacuum through an induction furnace, so that the uranium is partially melted and fills the can.
