818,258. Making composite nuclear-fuelelements. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBERSCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. Oct. 3, 1957 [Oct. 5, 1956], No. 31008/57. Classes 83 (1), 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] A core of fissionable-material is introduced into a casing, e.g. of zirconium, steel, columbium or aluminium, and welded in the molten state to the casing material without soldering. The method is preferably performed by casting. In an example, a uranium-rod is cleaned by electro-polishing, introduced with small clearance into a zirconium can made by deepdrawing or extrusion, and the assembly lowered under high vacuum through an induction furnace, so that the uranium is partially melted and fills the can.
