Abstract
Textile fabrics consisting at least in part of polyester fibres are treated, without subjecting them to any mechanical finishing pretreatment, in an aqueous bath containing alkali-metal hydroxide and 10-30 per cent (by weight of the bath) of an organic swelling agent and/or solvent which is at least partially soluble in water. Suitable organic swelling agents or solvents are alcohols and their derivatives, e.g. methyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The alkalimetal hydroxide is preferably linked with the organic solvent or swelling agent to form the bath in the form of an aqueous solution of concentration 25-50 DEG B<\>ae, and the bath preferably contains at least 10 per cent by weight of alkalimetal hydroxide. Preferably, also, the bath is maintained at a temperature between room temperature and 110 DEG C., and the fabric is passed through the bath so that the total period of immersion of any section is between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, and is then washed neutral and dried. The process is particularly suitable for the treatment of fabrics consisting entirely of polyester fibres, but mixed fabrics of polyester fibres and other fibres, e.g. cellulosic fibres, may be treated. The fabrics are given a soft hand without great reduction of the fibre strength.ALSO:Textile fabrics consisting at least in part of polyester fibres are treated, without subjecting them to any mechanical finishing pretreatment, in an aqueous bath containing alkalimetal hydroxide and 10-30 per cent (by weight of the bath) of an organic swelling agent and/or solvent which is at least partially soluble in water. Suitable organic swelling agents or solvents are alcohols and their derivatives, e.g. methyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The alkali-metal hydroxide is preferably mixed with the organic solvent or swelling agent to form the bath in the form of an aqueous solution of concentration 25-50 B<\>ae., and the bath preferably contains at least 10 per cent by weight of alkali metal hydroxide. The fabrics are given a soft hand without great reduction of the fibre strength.
