Abstract
817,956. Iron manufacture. SCHMITZ [nee HAUPT] P., PEDDINGHAUS, [nee STOCKEY, E.] DORKEN [nee STOCKEY] H., and JOHN [nee STOCKEY] G., [trading as STOCKEY & SCHMITZ], Oct. 19, 1955 [Oct. 22, 1954(2)], No. 29848/55. Class 72 [Also in Group XII] A smelting plant comprises at least one smelting furnace, a heatable, oscillatable, drum-shaped mixer, a charging opening in the mixer, a member receiving molten metal from the furnace and delivering it to the mixer, and means for moving the receiving and delivering member in rhythm with the oscillation of the mixer. As shown, a runner B delivers molten metal from one or more smelting furnaces to a vessel C pivotally mounted above a drum-shaped mixer D which may be oscillated about its longitudinal axis. In order that metal may enter the mixer when the charging. opening 33 is in a position remote from the vessel C a channel 32 is provided on the periphery of the mixer and a guide 34 adjacent the opening 33 directs the stream of metal into the mixer. Should the mixer overshoot its normal limits of oscillation the vessel C is pivoted so that metal is no longer discharged from its pouring spout 36, e.g. by a wheel 43 running off a cam track on the periphery of the mixer. A second pouring spout 40 on the vessel C may be used to fill a transportable vessel E a toggle joint being broken to allow the vessel C to tilt in the required direction. A burner may be provided in one end of the mixer, and metal collected in vessel E may be discharged into the mixer by a channel F. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown) the vessel C may be mounted at one side of the mixer, arms on the latter tilting the vessel C when the charging opening of the mixer is in the correct position to receive metal from the pouring spout of the vessel C. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the mixer is provided with channels on both sides of the charging opening, the vessel C is mounted above the mixer and is movable to a limited amount in the direction of oscillation of the mixer, and a pair of guides, mounted one on either side of the mixer, are moved into position by abutments on the mixer to direct molten metal into the charging opening even when the latter is at an angle of 90 degrees to the vertical.
