817,916. Extracting metals; lead; distilling zinc. NATIONAL SMELTING CO. Ltd. Jan. 17, 1958 [March 1, 1957], No. 6917/57. Class 82(1) In a process of smelting an oxidic zinciferous material with coke in a blast furnace a molten slag is run off, of which at least 81 per cent by weight consists of iron oxide (calculated FeO). lime and silica, the weight ratios CaO/FeO and SiO 2 /FeO lying within the hexagonal area shown in Fig. 1. Where the alumina content of the slag is above 5 per cent by weight and up to 15 per cent by weight the area of the graph representing the usable slag compositions is preferably restricted. Fig. 2 and 3 (not shown) show the areas appropriate for alumina contents of 10 per cent and 15 per cent respectively. Part of the iron oxide content of the slag may be derived from pyrites which may itself contain zinc. The zinciferous material may contain lead, in which case molten lead is produced and runs from the furnace together with the molten slag.
