Abstract

817,818. Coke-oven doors. KOPPERS CO. Inc. Oct. 4, 1956 [Oct. 5, 1955], No. 30292/56. Class 55 (1). In a coke-oven door having a door body 14, Fig. 3, with a sealing frame member 36 mounted thereon for co-operation with a sealing surface 9 of a door jamb frame 2 at the end of a coking retort oven 3, the frame 2 having door holding means 13 attached thereto for engaging locking means 62 mounted on the body 14, liquid springs of the type utilizing a reciprocable piston cooperating with a compressible medium disposed in an otherwise enclosed chamber, are interposed at 43 between the body 14 and means 39 acting on the sealing frame member 36. The flexible metallic sealing frame 36 is bolted at 37 to the body 14 and is pressed into sealing engagement with the surface 9 by means of a bearing bar frame 39 which has a plurality of spacedapart ears 41 integral therewith. A screw 42 threaded through each ear 41 slides in an aperture in body 14 so that the frame 39 is floatingly supported. The springs 43 have a threaded stud portion 44 integral therewith which engages a flange 16 on the body 14 and the springs are so spaced that their pistons 46 co-operate with the frame 39 near each of the ears 41. In normal coke-oven operation, the heat causes a greater curvature of the sealing frame 36 than the jamb frame 2 and accordingly the pistons 46 of the springs 43 placed near the centre of body 14, Fig. 1, have a greater travel than those of the springs 43 positioned at the corners. The door is locked in position by two latch bar mechanisms each of which comprises a casting 51 bolted to the body 14 with the interposition of gaskets 54 and shims 56. A spindle 57, integral with casting 51, slidably receives a thrust collar 64 having a brass bushing 66, and the latch bar 62 is rotatably mounted, by means of its brass bushing 63, on the thrust collar 64. Liquid springs 68 are mounted between the casting 51 and collar 64. An asbestos or canvas cover 73 protects the springs from dust and heat. To unlock the door a bellows motor 76 is employed. On supplying fluid through conduit 80 to a pressure chamber 77, the cylinder 84, integral with one side of the chamber 77, is thrust against the collar 64, whilst the shaft 90 fixed to the other side of the pressure chamber is forced rearwardly against the action of springs 79, 100, to cause screw bolts 106, mounted in cylinder 84, to ride upon a pair of semi-circular claws 91 and thus cause the latter to grip the shoulder 61 on spindle 57. In a modification, Fig. 5, when pressure is applied to cause the latch bar 62<SP>1</SP> to slide towards the door jamb frame, it is automatically made to rotate. This is accomplished by mounting the latch bar 62<SP>1</SP> on spindle 57<SP>1</SP> by means of an octagonally shaped bushing 109 which has a pair of cam tracks on opposite sides engaged by follower posts 112 fixed to the spindle 57<SP>1</SP>. Thrust followers 113, 114, slidably mounted on the spindle 57<SP>1</SP> on each side of the latch bar 62<SP>1</SP> are connected by spacer pins 116 passing through arcuate slots 117 in the latch bar. The springs 68<SP>1</SP> act between the casting 51<SP>1</SP> and thrust follower 113. The door is hung from a hook 12 on the door jamb frame 2 by means of a hook 17 having a convexed surface 18 to allow the door to swing into a vertical position before fastening it. Lifting hooks 48, 49 permit the door to be lifted and moved by a machine, and a door 21 closes an opening in the door body 14 which may receive a leveller bar carried by a pusher machine. Specification 707,351 is referred to.
