Abstract

817,802. Centrifugal pumps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 11, 1955 [Nov. 12, 1954], No. 32353/55. Class 110 (1). A centrifugal pump comprises two outlet ports in side-by-side relation, and a valve positioned between the two outlets and movable to block one of the outlets in dependence upon the direction of impeller rotation. The valve 66, which may be of rigid construction, but is preferably moulded from rubber or flexible plastics, has two side faces 72, 73 which in the two alternative positions of the valve close one or the other of two alternative discharge ports 68, 69. Preferably, the inoperative side face extends radially with respect to the axis of the impeller, as shown. A hinge portion 70 of relatively thin cross-section is joined by an anchoring bead 71 to the pump casing 55. When the direction of impeller rotation is reversed, the valve 66 is moved to its alternative position, partly by fluid forces and partly by engagement of a projection 76 by the impeller blades 54. A recess 76a may be provided to ensure adequate clearance between the valve 66 and the impeller during the changeover. Specification 817,801, [Group VIII], is referred to.
