Abstract
817,631. Gauging thickness of coatings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 3, 1956 [May 4, 1955; Sept. 24, 1955], Nos. 12984/55 and 27289/55. Class 106 (2). A method of determining the thickness of a coating applied to a base material of a hardness or nature different from that of the coating comprises effecting a penetration through the coating by an abrading tool and utilizing the difference of nature to give an indication of the movement the tool has made to penetrate the coating. An electric motor 4 is mounted in a casing 1, with its rotor spindle 5, 6, vertical. At its upper end 5, the spindle is ground flat and acts against the plunger 7 of a depth gauge 8, the plunger being acted on by a spring 7a. At its lower end 6, the spindle carries an abrading tool 12 in the form of a rotary dental burr, having a partly spherical end of less than 1/ 32 inch radius. The spindle 5, 6, has a small end play in its bearings, which is sufficient to cover the thickness of the thickest coating likely to be measured. In order to raise the spindle 5, 6, and thus the tool 12, a rod 15 with a stepped end portion 15a is mounted under a flanged ring 13 secured to the spindle 6. In use the tool is lowered on to the surface by rotation of the rod 15 and the depth gauge set to zero. The motor 4 is then started and the tool gradually abrades away the coating under the action of the spring 7a and the weight of the armature. The speed of penetration is substantially constant until the base material is met, when there is a marked retardation in progress and the note of the tool changes. The motor is then stopped and the depth noted. Also described are a tool which operates on non-conductive coatings on a conductive base material and gives an indication by means of a lamp, when the material is reached, and a tool which can be operated by a spring motor. The drilling head may also be driven by compressed air, this being especially suitable for use under water. The apparatus may also include means for recording on a tape, the time for definite stages of penetration, e.g. every 0.001 inch.
