Abstract

817,144. Electroplating. AMP Inc. Dec. 20, 195C [Dec. 20, 1955], No. 38870/56. Class 41. A process for electroplating undercoated, e.g. irregularly-shaped, aluminium articles with tin comprises first depositing a thin coating of tin by barrel plating from a stannate electrolyte and subsequently depositing an additional tin coating by barrel plating from an electrolyte containing fluoboric acid and tin fluoborate. The articles are first cleaned, immersed in a sulphuric acid solution and then in a nitric acid solution and given a thin zinc deposit by immersion in a solution of zinc oxide and sodium hydroxide. The articles are then preferably electroplated with copper by barrel plating using a copper anode and employing an electrolyte comprising 3.5 to 5.5 oz./gal. copper cyanide, 1.1 times the copper cyanide concentration of sodium cyanide, 0.1 to 0.5 oz./gal. free cyanide, and 4.5 oz./gal. Rochelle salts. The pH is held at 9.5 to 10.5, e.g. by adding NaHCO 3 , and the temperature is 70‹ to 100‹ F., a coating of 0.0001 to 0.0005 inch being produced. The articles are then barrel-plated for not more than 30 minutes at 150‹ to 170‹ F. in the following bath : sodium stannate 16 oz./gal., sodium hydroxide 2¢ oz./gal., sodium acetate 2 oz./gal., and hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate <SP>1</SP>/ 16 th oz./gal. This tin coating is about 0.00001 inch thick. The articles are then washed and barrel-plated in a bath comprising: water 67.4 gal., fluoboric acid (42 per cent) 6 gal., tin fluoborate 26.6 gal., glue or gelatin 5 lbs. and beta naphthol 0.8 lbs., the pH being 0.2 or less. The final tin coating is 0.002 inch thick. The electrical conditions are as follows: copper plating, voltage 12, amperage 38 for 10 minutes, then voltage 6 for another 50 minutes; stannate plating, voltage 6, amperage 30; fluoborate plating, voltage 8, amperage 90 for 60 minutes.
