Abstract

816,979. Making heat exchangers, roofing &c. panels. FROMSON, H. A. Nov. 11, 1957 [Nov. 13, 1956; Dec. 19, 1956], No. 35093/57. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group X] In a method of making articles such as heat exchangers, and roofing panels from a combination of sheet metal and metal tubing, in which the interior of a tube is treated in known manner to prevent bonding, the tube is applied to a sheet and the assembly rolled to flatten the tube and bond it to the sheet. One or more treated tubes 1 are applied to a sheet 2 and the assembly rolled lengthwise of the tubes to effect the required thickness reduction and elongation. The rolled assembly may be annealed to improve bonding by causing recrystallization across the bond interfaces. A tool is then inserted between the unbonded surfaces 3 and the tube sections expanded by mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic means, resulting in a product having passages with relatively thin upper walls 4. In a modification the treated tubes are bonded between two sheets to produce tube portions of equal wall thickness. In another modification, a single tube 15 is bonded to one edge of a sheet 16, Fig. 9, which edge is then severed as at 18-18 to form a roofing, or like sheet, with a split edge 19, 20, Fig. 10, which may be of higher tensile strength than the rest of the sheet. The portion 19 of the sheet may form a flap to cover the head of a nail 22, and may also enclose the end of a neighbouring sheet 27 as in Fig. 12.
