Abstract

Class 100(1) An apparatus for feeding tyre building material to a tyre building apparatus, comprises a support carrying a supply roll for tyre building web material interleaved with a liner and a liner receiving and storing roll, the rolls being mounted on spaced parallel shafts rotatably journalled in the support, friction brake means coacting between the support and the supply roll to place tension on the web material as it is withdrawn from the roll, means between the supply and liner rolls to wind the line on the liner roll and co-operating with the friction means to tension the liner as it is wound on the liner roll, and compensating means operating to progcressively vary the brake and liner winding actions so as to maintain substantially constant tension on the web and liner materials during the tyre building operation. As shown, sets of supply and lining rolls 10 and 12 are mounted in a frame 11 for movement along an endless path into an unloading position where the supply roll is unwound to supply a tyre building machine, not shown, while the lining roll 12 is rewound to take-up the lining material 43 interleaved with the unwound tyre building material 13. The supply and lining rolls 10, 12 are carried by shafts 14, 15 mounted in bearings 16, 17 respectively carried by a support formed by a chain 18 which moves the rolls in the endless path. The supply roll 10 is keyed to the shaft 14. A hub 21, at one end of the supply roll, has a wear resistant surface 22. A thrust member 23 having a brake surface 25 is slidable along a key-way 24 secured in a sleeve 20 and is urged into engagement with the surface 22 by a spring 26 confined between the member 23 and a stop member 28 slidable along the key-way. The member 28 has an external thread engaging an internal thread in a sleeve 30 secured to the roll 10. The rotation of the tyre building drum, not shown, during a tyre building operation, draws material 13 from the roll 10, while a wound spiral spring 35 within a casing 34 secured to a sprocket wheel 33 tends to rotate the lining roll in the winding direction. One end of the spring 35 is secured to a bush 32 free on the shaft 14, while the opposite end is secured to the casing 34. A chain 42 passes around the sprocket 33 and a sprocket 40 secured to the shaft 15 of the roller 12. The pitch of the thread on the screwed sleeve 30 is such that the member 28 is moved axially, during unwinding, at such a rate that consequent reductions in the braking action keep step with the reductions in diameter of the supply roll and force exerted by the spring 35, thereby maintaining substantially constant tension on the web and liner materials.
