Abstract

In the pyrolysis of methane to acetylene, the feed material is passed through a reaction zone heated to pyrolysis temperature and the soft carbon removed from the reaction zone after not more than 5 seconds of pyrolysis. The soft carbon is light and burns with a visible flame and this material is detrimental to the production of acetylene. The hard carbon burns very slowly even at high temperatures and does not affect the acetylene yield. In a preferred embodiment, a reactor made of pure aluminium oxide 20 inches long and 7/64 inch internal diameter was heated to temperatures from 1460 DEG to 1630 DEG C. and a feed gas comprising 95.0 per cent methane, 2.94 per cent nitrogen, and 1.29 per cent ethane was passed through for a period of about 1.5 seconds. The feed was then stopped and air introduced into the tube at a rate of about 5 times the flow of the feed of the gases for about 2 seconds causing the soft carbon to burn off. The tube was then reheated to the initial temperature by means of a resistance ribbon and the feed again passed after 5-10 seconds. The product contained 4-11 per cent of acetylene. Pressures of 0.5 to 1.5 atmospheres may be utilized.
