Abstract
Acetylene and sodium bi-carbonate are jointly produced by a process which comprises the following steps in order: (1) calcining calcium carbonate to produce carbon dioxide and calcium oxide; (2) reacting a portion of the calcium oxide with carbon to produce calcium carbide and carbon monoxide; (3) reacting said calcium carbide with water to produce acetylene and calcium hydroxide; (4) reacting calcium hydroxide so obtained with ammonium chloride to produce ammonia and calcium chloride; (5) reacting the ammonia produced in step (4) and carbon dioxide with sodium chloride to produce ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate; (6) separating ammonium chloride from sodium bicarbonate; and (7) recycling ammonium chloride thus produced to step (4). In a preferred embodiment, limestone is calcined at 1100 DEG C. with coke to produce CaO and CO2. 1950 lbs. of the lime is heated in a carbide furnace at 2000 DEG C. with 1250 lbs. of coke. The CaC2 produced is cooled and crushed and then treated with water at ambient temperature to produce acetylene which is collected. The resulting Ca(OH)2 is mixed with the remainder of the CaO from the CaCO3 calcining step and then mixed with ammonium chloride made from ammonia gas and sodium chloride, and the whole subjected to the action of CO2 in carbonating towers. From the lower section of the carbonating towers a product containing sodium bicarbonate and ammonium chloride is removed at 25 DEG C. and filtered to separate the ammonium chloride liquid from the solid sodium bicarbonate which is then calcined at 190 DEG C. to produce sodium carbonate.
