Abstract

816,486. Grabs for handling materials. JOY MANUFACTURING CO. (CANADA) Ltd. Oct. 9, 1956 [Oct. 14, 1955], No. 30697/56. Class 78 (4). The jaws 16 (Fig. 1) of a grab are pivoted to a spider 15 universally mounted on the lower end 14b of the piston rod of the ram 10 operating the grab. As illustrated, the spider 15 is carried by a gimbal mounting including a yoke 27 (Fig. 3) pivoted at 28 to the spider 15 and at 34 to the piston rod 14. The cable supporting the grab is secured to an upper extension 14a of the piston rod so that the cable is automatically slackened as the piston rod moves upwardly to close the grab, thus permitting the grab to dig into the material. The usual closing links 17 are connected between the lower end 12 of the ram cylinder and the jaws 16. The distributer valve 37 for the ram, which is double acting, is mounted on the ram cylinder.
