Abstract

816,419. Ice-making. FLAKICE CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1958 [March 6, 1957], No. 6368/58. Class 29 In a machine for ice-making or congealing liquids in which the liquid is run on to an endless metal belt which moves over a stationary refrigerated surface, heat transfer from the belt to the surface is enhanced by applying a partial vacuum to the space between the belt and the surface. Evaporator 1 is mounted in inclined position on frames 11 by lower brackets 3 and upper bolts 7 for slight angular adjustment. It consists of a metal block in which are embedded evaporator pipes 115 and its upper surface is convex longitudinally of the belt and concave transversely of the belt. The endless belt 47 passes over lower and upper rollers 43, 45, the former being motor-driven, and has along each edge a resilient pad 59 the lower part of which seals against the side walls of the evaporator and the upper part of which forms a dam to confine the water to the belt. The upper surface of evaporator 1 is formed with _grooves 125, 126, to which glycol or other low-freezing liquid is supplied by a pump 87. The glycol being cooled by an evaporator 137. The suction side of pump 87 is connected to apertures 128 in the evaporator and thus withdrawn glycol from the space between the evaporator and belt 47 and maintains a partial vacuum in that space. A pad 139 at the upper end of the evaporator bears on the belt to prevent glycol being carried away by the belt and a second pad 153 at the lower end prevents condensation being carried by the belt into the evaporator area. Water from a tank 171 is pumped over two precooler plates 181 whence it runs on to the belt 47 through distributers 185. Plates 181 contains evaporator passages 183 the pressure in which is controlled so that their temperature is always above freezing point. Ice frozen on the belt peels therefrom as it passes over the top roller 45 and falls into a shoot 182. Liquid refrigerant is circulated through the evaporator passages 115 by a motor driven pump. The refrigerating and electric control circuits are described in detail.
