Abstract

A fuel composition, suitable for use in internal combustion engines of the spark-ignition type, comprises a major proportion of a liquid hydrocarbon boiling within the gasoline boiling range and less than 100 parts per million by weight of an oil-soluble copolymer of (i) a vinyl or vinylidene compound containing a straight hydrocarbon chain of at least 6 carbon atoms, and (ii) a vinyl or vinylidene compound containing at least one basic nitrogen atom, the copolymer containing 0.2-5 per cent by weight of basic nitrogen, having a ratio of the number of carbon atoms to the number of basic nitrogen atoms of at least 20 : 1 and having an inherent viscosity determined at 0.1 per cent concentration in benzene at 25 DEG C. of at least 0.1. Liquid hydrocarbons mentioned are gasoline, mineral spirits, cleaners' naphtha, benzene, toluene, xylenes and isopentane. Component (i) may be an ester, amide or hydrocarbon, particularly decyl or 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl acrylate, lauryl or 9-octadecenyl methacrylate, vinyl laurate or stearate, N-octadecyl acrylamide or dodecyl styrene. Component (ii) may be an amino-substituted olefin, a polymerizable basic nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound, a vinyl ether of an amino-alcohol, an amide of an unsaturated carboxylic acid having amino-substituents on the amido nitrogen, a polymerizable unsaturated amine or an amino nitrogen-containing ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid. Specific examples of component (ii) are p-(beta-diethylaminoethyl) styrene, vinyl pyridine, 2-vinyl-5-ethylpyridine, beta-diethylaminoethyl vinyl ether, N-(beta-dimethylaminoethyl) acrylamide, diallylamine and beta-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate. The fuel composition may also contain anti-detonants (e.g. tetra-ethyl lead, iron carbonyl, dicyclopentadienyl iron, xylidine or N-methyl aniline), lead scavengers (e.g. ethylene dibromide or dichloride), dyes, spark plug antifoulants (e.g. tricresyl, dimethyl xylyl or diphenyl cresyl phosphate), combustion modifiers (e.g. alkyl boronic acids or lower alkyl phosphates or phosphites), oxidation inhibitors (e.g. N,N1-di-sec.-butyl phenylene diamine, N-n-butyl - p - aminophenol or 2,6-di-tert.-butyl - 4 - methyl phenol), metal deactivators (e.g. N,N1-disalicylal - 1,2 - propane - diamine) and rust inhibitors (e.g. polymerized linoleic acid or N,C-disubstituted imidazolines). In examples, gasoline compositions are described containing decyl acrylate/4-dimethylaminomethyl-styrene copolymer, lauryl methacrylate/4-vinyl-pyridine copolymer, vinyl laurate/vinyl beta-diethylaminoethyl ether copolymer, lauryl methacrylate / 4 - dimethylaminocyclohexyl methacrylamide copolymer dodecyl styrene / beta-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer or vinyl lauryl ether / vinyl beta-diethylaminoethyl ether copolymer. In a further example, a gasoline composition is described containing lauryl methacrylate / beta-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer, tetraethyl lead, ethylene dibromide and 2,6-di-tert.-butyl-4-methylphenol.
