Abstract

816,176. Measuring average speed. GOODHEAD, R. A. Aug. 28, 19M [Aug. 29, 1956], No. 26400/56. Class 40 (1). A device for calculating the average speed of, a vehicle from a given datum point comprises a Wheatstone bridge having four resistance arms, two of these being automatically and remotely varied in proportion to the distance and time elapsed from the datum point, means for continuously balancing the bridge and an indicator coupled to the balancing means. In Fig. 1, the arms D and T are adjusted in steps by impulses obtained from the speedometer of the vehicle and from a clock or electronic counter respectively. The alternating output voltage from the bridge is amplified in V3 and applied to the grids of two thyratrons V1 and V2 whose anodes are fed with A.C. synchronized with the bridge supply. If the unbalance, voltage is large enough one or other of the relays L1, L2 is energized (depending on the phase sense of the unbalanced voltage) and changes the contacts YZ to drive the motor M and rebalance the bridge at S. The modification of Fig. 2 is designed to calculate the time lead or lag of the vehicle over a predetermined average speed. Here the resistor S is preset for a given speed, the small portion 28 of which can be inserted manually to change the preset value by ยข m.p.h. steps, and rebalancing is carried out on a portion of the arm T. In both circuits each of the arms D and T comprises in series one continuously variable resistor, one 16-step variable resistor changed' one step per revolution of the first and a further 16-step resistor changed one'step per revolution of the previous resistor. The display unit of the instrument has a pointer actuated by the rebalancing motor (either directly or via a selsyn or similar link) and four alternative scales, two for m.p.h. (changed by switching'in different resistors for S in Fig. 1) and two for minutes lead or lag (changed .by switching in different values for 30 in Fig. 2). The usual on/off switches are provided together with a control for returning the speed and time counters to zero before commencing a measurement, and also a switch 29 for inserting the fine resistor 28.
