Abstract

816,169. Brake friction elements. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1957 [Oct. 30, 1956], No. 30831/57. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] A brake friction element comprises a metal support having a friction surface thereon consisting of sprayed molybdenum, which is stated to give a wear-resistance over fifty times that of a cast iron friction surface. Fig. 1 shows a brake drum wherein the molybdenum layer 32 is sprayed on to a rim portion 22 of aluminium. The portion 22 has cooling fins 24 and a steel backing-plate 26 peripherally crimped over the aluminium part at its edge 28. Fig. 5 shows a brake disc comprising an annular molybdenum layer 64 sprayed on to the face of a plate 60 of pressed steel or aluminium. The thickness of molybdenum should preferably be between 0.002 and 0.030 inch.
