Abstract

W or Mo is alloyed with from 0.05 per cent Re up to 38 per cent in the case of W and up to 50 per cent in the case of Mo. Metallic Re may be added before or during the melting of W or Mo, or powdered Re may be mixed with powdered W or Mo prior to sintering, time being allowed for interdiffusion. Alternatively, there may be a reduction between a powdered compound of Re and powdered W or Mo or a powdered compound of W or Mo, or between powdered Re and a powdered compound of W or Mo. The alloy may be produced in wire, strip or sheet form and may be used for bright emitters, cores for oxide coated emitters, heater wires in indirectly-heated cathodes, high temperature springs, and valve and lamp filaments. According to the Provisional Specification a W alloy may contain up to 50 per cent Re. Specification 591,420 is referred to.
