Abstract
In a method of polymerization of an alpha-olefin which is gaseous at the temperature and pressure of polymerization using as catalyst a mixture of an organo-metal compound and a compound of a metal of Groups IVa, Va and VIa, an improvement comprises contacting the gaseous alpha-olefin with finely divided solid particles comprising the catalyst and an inert solid carrier material in the substantial absence of a liquid solvent or diluent. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, isobutylene, butadiene, isoprene, and their mixtures. Specified carriers are silica, titanium oxide, clays, asbestos and glass fibres, polystyrene, sodium chloride, sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate and calcium oxide.
