Abstract

3- or 5-amino-1 : 2 : 4-triazole is prepared by heating an aminoguanidine salt with formic acid, in the absence of an added inert organic solvent, to a temperature within the range 100 DEG to 120 DEG C. Water may be added at the beginning of the reaction and a quantity of the added water and the water formed by condensation is preferably distilled off before completion of the reaction. Specified aminoguanidine salts are the bicarbonate, nitrate and sulphate.
