Abstract
815,063. Linear particle accelerators : velocity-modulated beam tubes. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. Feb. 16, 1956 [Feb. 17, 1955], No. 4804/55. Class 39(1). A linear accelerator has a first section 5 in which energy is transferred from a velocitymodulated electron beam to an R.F. wave, a second section 6 in which energy is transferred from the R.F. wave to the beam and an intermediate structure 7, e.g. a door-knob transformer, which couples the two sections and has a central passage 10 for allowing only a proportion of the beam to pass from the first section into the second section. The velocity-modulation may be accomplished in a buncher cavity 3 which is followed by a drift tube 4, or in the first section 5. Excess R.F. energy at the outlet 13 may be dissipated in a load or fed back, through a phase shifter, either to the buncher cavity or to the input end of section 5 or section 6. In Fig. 3. an electrostatic or electromagnetic analyser 16 is provided between the two sections 5, 6 so that electrons with the higher energies only are allowed to pass through the aperture 18. Sections 5 and 6 may be aligned with one another, instead of being at an angle, by using a magnet system with more than two poles. The sections may be disc loaded waveguides or concentric lines or may comprise helices.
