Abstract
814,857. Tufting machines. RUSSELLLACEY MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. June 12, 1957 [Dec. 17, 1956], No. 18595/57. Class 112 Tufting machines; needle - driving mechanisms, disconnecting. In a tufting machine parallel needle bars 56, 58, carrying needles 60, 62 threaded with yarns of different colour, are mounted to reciprocate in a head 48 which is shiftable laterally to engage one or the other of the needle bars operatively with a driving- crank 24. Pins 52 projecting laterally from head 48 are slidable in bearings 50 carried by a fixed plate 44. Crank 24, carried by a drive shaft 18, is coupled by a pitman 38 to a block 40 having a lug which is slidable in a vertical slot 42 in plate 44. In the topmost position of block 40 a horizontal slot in said lug is aligned with a horizontal slot 46 in plate 44. The needle bars respectively carry blocks 64, 66 provided with rearwardly extending lugs which may, by the lateral shifting of head 48, alternatively be disposed in the slot in block 40 and in slot 46. Forwardly extending lugs on blocks 64. 66 are disposed in vertical slots in a cover plate 68 carried by head 48, to prevent rotation of the needle bars. The arrangement is thereby such that while one of the blocks 64, 66 is coupled to block 40 to reciprocate therewith in slot 42, the other is retained stationary in slot 46. A looper 30 is carried by a rock shaft 30<SP>1</SP>, and a blade 32, which co-operates with the looper to cut the loops, is carried by a rock shaft 32<SP>1</SP>. A linkage 34 interconnects the rock shaft and is in turn connected by a linkage to the drive shaft 18.
