Abstract

A glass or ceramic body is provided with a transparent coating consisting of oxides of tin and boron having a surface resistivity of 1-10,000 ohms per square cm. At least one further oxide of titanium, aluminium, beryllium, magnesium, silicon, zinc, manganese or cobalt may be included. In the example, the coating is applied by vapour deposition or spraying stannic chloride and boric acid dissolved in hydrochloric acid by the method disclosed in Specification 803,885. Previously sand-blasted porcelain rods may be so coated to form resistors. Electrically heated windscreens, heating elements, food heaters or conductive glass windows for electrical instruments may be made by coating glass bodies in this manner, if necessary as they emerge from the furnace. The glass may be tempered by quenching with this spray, air jets being applied during or after coating. The coating is protected by varnish.
