Abstract
b -Ionone is prepared by cyclising pseudoionone with acidic reagents at a temperature below 15 DEG C. and with stirring of the reaction mixture after the addition of the cyclising agent, the temperature of the reaction mixture being kept below 15 DEG C. until all the b -ionone is removed. In examples pseudoionone is added with stirring to a mixture of concentrated sulphuric acid and glacial acetic acid at 10-15 DEG C. stirred for 5-10 minutes at 10-15 DEG C. and then poured into broken ice and extracted with ether or benzene, the b -ionone being extracted in the solvent layer and purified by steam distillation.
