Hopper 1 (Fig. 1), feeds a layer of plastic powder on to supports 3 for manufacture by sintering into porous separator plates for accumulators, a hollow body 5 being pivoted at 7 and supported by bar 8 resting on stationary guides 4 to provide an adjustable scraper 9 for determining the level of the said layer and to ensure the uniformity of the said level by avoiding bridging. Fig. 9. The hollow body 5, pivoted at 7, is formed with curved scraper 25 pivoted at 30 and adjustable at 26, and includes a second hollow body 21 pivoted at 20 to body 5 and carrying a second scraper 22 so that the layer of material is scraped twice to attain greater uniformity. The heap H of material may be agitated by vibrating rakes.
