Each of one or more rib welt transfer bar carriages is arranged to hold one or more rib welt transfer bars and to be movable either manually or automatically along a support disposed on a straight-bar machine above the needle bars so that the transfer bars can be easily lifted off the carriage or carriages and placed in position in the machine and empty transfer bars placed on the carriage or carriages. In one form there is provided a carriage which can run along an overhead support disposed above the machine and secured to the machine frame or otherwise suitably carried and positioned. The carriage comprises side members having inclined slots to receive the ends of the rib welt transfer bars. When the machine has automatic rib welt transfer mechanism the carriage is made to hold one more transfer bar than there are needle bars in the machine, so to accommodate the first empty transfer bar removed. The overhead support extends beyond one end of the machine to a suitable loading point; and the loaded carriage is moved manually along the overhead support from one needle bar to another. When the number of needle bars reaches twelve, two carriages may be provided, each holding six transfer bars. The carriage or carriages may be connected to a wire or cable, suitably driven, and so automatically moved along the overhead support and stopped in the required position. As shown, carriages 1, one for each needle bar, are attached by studs 2, 3, to an endless chain 4 supported by and sliding in a trough 5. Inclined slots 8 in the carriages receive the ends of a transfer bar 9. The chain passes around sprockets and is driven by a motor, and the carriages are loaded at one end of the machine.
